About Us
Located at 414 McComb Street in the Baertown Community, Alpha Center Public Library first opened March 22, 1964. The building was originally the Universal School. The Community Development Club, under the leadership of Mrs. Frankie Bethea, leased the building in 1961 and began a community center with a library of books and materials donated by interested patrons. Mrs. Laura Jackson Ashley served as its first librarian and Mrs. Johnyne Williams served as her assistant.
